There has been a longstanding paradigm in management literature - and indeed in consulting practice - that focuses on continued expansion, as the overriding goal, the apogee of business perfection. Of course there are other aspects too - about quality and cost control - but if we are to believe what is written then large corporate is ‘where it is at’.
